Coach, Blade Club Bronze Medallist at the South East Asian Games, Champion for Singapore Open. Aik Phong started fencing at the age of 19, whist at his 4th and final year at Carleton University in Ottawa, Canada in 1991. Though with only 1 year to go before graduation, his coach in University, James Ireland, a former Team Canada fencer, discovered his talents and selected him to be in the college team (usually reserved for fencers with 2,3,4 years experience). Aik-Phong went on to win a bronze medal in the Ontario Collegiate fencing championships in 1992, Team Sabre event. Within that year, he continued to make his mark by winning an Individual Silver Medal in B de B 1992 "AAA" competition held in Montreal, Canada with an international field of fencers from both USA and Canada. Aik Phong was quoted by his coach in Carleton University (published in the School's weekly newspaper 'The Charlatan') as "the most talented rookie fencer he has ever seen".Back in Singapore, with only a year plus of fencing experience, he topped the Singapore Open Fencing Championships, went on to represent Singapore and won a Bronze Medal in the SEA Games of 1993. Aik-Phong started free lance coaching from the year 2001, and has been a relief coach at RJC and CHIJ SJC. He has also taught fencing appreciation classes to help raise funds for the victims of the Tsunami disaster in 2005, as well as introductory fencing classes for his team of business distributors.Since retiring from competitive fencing in 1997, he has held various positions of trust and leadership within the Amateur Fencing Association of Singapore, AFAS. (Currently known as Fencing Singapore). He has served as Hon. Treasurer, as well as the VP for Youth Development Fencing for AFAS. Since the start of 2007, he has been teaching Greendale Secondary School. From 2009, he added Raffles Institution (Junior College) in his portfolio. He is a NCAP 1 certified coach and has First Aid certification. |
